| Malde oil-filled | Dry MPP | |
|---|---|---|
| Electrodes | Solid metal foil | Thin vapour-deposited metal layer |
| Dielectric | Thicker film, oil-impregnated | Thin film, dry / gas filled |
| On an internal fault | Element fuse isolates it | Self-heals — burns away metal |
| Output over years | No fall in current for 60 months (guaranteed) | kVAr drops gradually |
| Moisture & corrosion | Sealed in oil — protected | Metal layer can corrode |
| Heat & voltage spikes | Oil carries heat away, quenches discharges | More sensitive |
| Working life | 30–50 years (Malde) | Shorter |
| Price | Higher up front — more material | Lower up front |
Based on Malde Capacitors’ published notes and the general behaviour of the two technologies.
Measure the capacitor current with a tong tester or ammeter at least once every 2 months and keep a record. If the current falls, the capacitor is losing kVAr — with Malde, that is covered by the 60-month guarantee.
